judge sues court that reprimanded him

Postman Bites Dog!

The NJ Law Journal reports:

Former Municipal Court Judge Wilson Campbell claims he was unfairly disciplined and pressured to resign over his undisclosed affair with a white bailiff assigned to his Jersey City courtroom, and that it was racially discriminatory. The state Supreme Court reprimanded Campbell on Jan. 28 for failing to tell superiors about the relationship as required by court rules. Three days later, Campbell filed a pro se suit in federal court in Newark, Cambpell v. Supreme Court of New Jersey et al., 11-cv-005555, bringing counts under 42 U.S.C. 1981 and the state Law Against Discrimination. Campbell claims he got harsher treatment than a white judge disciplined for a relationship with a court worker, Superior Court Judge Lawrence DeBello. Though DeBello received a stiffer sanction, a censure, for exchanging romantic e-mails with a law clerk, he was not asked to resign and still sits as a judge.
